CAMPBELL WINS RISEBOROUGH

Brighton & Hove's assistant professional, Ian Campbell won the Riseborough Memorial Trophy played at Littlehampton on Wednesday 27th August. A round of 5 under par 65 saw him lead after the morning 18, and when he added a 3 under par 67 in the afternnon, his 8 under total was enough to win by 1 stroke.
This has capped a good month for Ian who won the Southern Assistants Championship, came 2nd in the Sussex Par 3 Chamiponship, and also finished well in the National Assistants.
Well Done Ian.

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

.
Congratulations to our Scratch Team who narrowly beat Seaford on a countback in the PAV IT semi-final played at East Brighton on Saturday 16th August.
The performance of the morning in the foursomes was by Richard Lyons & Stuart Maplesden who were 4 under gross after 13 holes to secure a 6&5 victory. Gary Daw and Andy Tolman lost as did Steve Stark and Tim Hoyles after a tight match won by Seaford with a birdie at 18. Wayne Humphrey and Craig Millyard managed a half which left us trailing 2.1 - 1.5 at lunch.
In the afternoon singles, team captain Steve Stark led from the front with a blistering display which included a 6 under par spell of 13 holes from the fourth to the seventeenth. Stuart Maplesden looked in control of his match, but lost the last 2 holes to lose one down.
In games 3 and 4 Gary Daw and Tim Hoyles were comfortable winners, which then made the score 3.5 - 2.5 in our favour.
Richard Lyons then lost one down after being 4 up early on, and the scores were level.
Wayne Humphrey made a valiant fight back to get to all square playing the 18th, but again it went Seaford's way with a birdie 4, and once again we were a point behind.
Next came Andy Tolman who was one up playing the 18th, but once again the Seaford player found a birdie to halve the match, and we were 6-5 down, with just Craig Millyard left on the course.
2 up with 2 to play things were looking good until Millyard hit his tee shot out of bounds at 17 to lose the hole.
Calculations were being done, and Club Captain Chris Snell, and Team Manager Phil Bonsall who had both rushed up to East Brighton after the Men's Invitation at Brighton & Hove worked out that if Craig could halve the 18th, and win his match, we would go through on a countback of holes won.
After 2 shots each the Seaford player was 40 yards short of the 18th green, and Millyard was in the greenside bunker. The Seaford player pitched on to about 20 feet, and Millyard splashed out of the bunker just inside him. When Seaford missed their birdie putt, everyone held their breath as Millyard had 2 putts for the match to send us into the final. A brilliant putt to within 6 inches of the hole was then conceded and we had won by the narrowest of margins.
The Final will be played at Copthorne Golf Club on Saturday 13th September. Please come along and support what promises to be a great day.
Well done guys.

GROGAN'S GREEN
.
Grogan's Green, a competition played annually and sponsored by Tom Grogan, was played on Saturday 9th August.  This was the 23rd year of the event!!
The competition format is stableford in teams of three with the best two scores out of three to count.  We play nine holes and have lunch before going out for the second nine.
There was a great turnout since it is a very popular event and nineteen teams took part this year.  This was up on last year when thirteen teams competed.  However we played in absolutely atrocious conditions, lashing rain and high winds and credit has to be given to those teams who went out again after lunch.  Fifteen teams fought on to the bitter end!!
Ron Bardouleau, Malcolm Searle and Judy McKemey came in after nine holes with a very formidable 43 points but with 31 points after lunch and so a total of 74 points, they came in 3rd place overall.
John Langston, Frank Groom and Aileen Elcock played steadily all day and returned with 39 and 35 points respectively, also a total 74 points to take 2nd place on the countback.
However, both those teams were pipped at the post by Chris Snell, our Captain, Bruce Mitchell and Sheila Smith who went out in 33 points and came in with marvellous 42 points to clinch the overall winning score of 75 points.
Chris Snell has been in many winning teams this year which must be very gratifying for him and has helped to make his captaincy even more enjoyable and successful.
The scores for the competition in general were really quite respectable considering the awful weather conditions and congratulations must go to all competitors for their stamina and tenacity.
Grateful thanks must also go to Chris Lloyd, our caterer, who provided us all with a very substantial hot meal at lunch time.  This was very much appreciated by all players and visitors.  Thanks too to Sharon and the girls for taking care of our needs both in the bar and in the dining room.
Marie-Louise Grogan
